Sugarcane stage by stage
Sugarcane stays in the field for a year or more, and the same land often grows it again and again. Over decades this wears the soil out. Growers then see poor germination, gaps in the row, uneven growth and weak ratoons, even with new varieties and more fertilizer.
Main growing areas: Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
Planting and germination
About the first 6 weeksSetts need moist, airy soil and healthy buds. Poor germination, sett rot and gaps show up here. Gaps filled late never catch up.
Tillering
About 6 weeks to 4 monthsThe number of tillers decides the number of millable canes. Weak roots, compacted soil and early water stress reduce tillering.
Grand growth
About 4 to 9 monthsCanes put on height and weight. The crop needs steady water and balanced nutrition. Lodging and pests matter most now.
Maturity and ratoon
About 9 months onwardSugar builds up in the cane. After harvest, stubble care and soil health decide how good the ratoon will be.
Common sugarcane problems
Problems farmers bring to us
- Poor germination and gaps
- Plants dying after germination
- Uneven growth
- Weak ratoons
- Soil hard and tired after years of sugarcane
- More fertilizer every year for the same yield
What to check first
- Get a soil test: organic carbon, pH and salts (EC) tell you a lot about tired land.
- Use healthy, fresh setts from a good nursery.
- Look at the roots of weak plants: are they short, brown or few?
- Note where gaps are: low spots and hard patches point to water and soil structure problems.

Sugarcane questions
Why is my sugarcane germination poor?
Common reasons are old or damaged setts, dry or waterlogged soil at planting, hard soil with little air, and sett rot. Tired soil with low organic matter makes all of these worse.
Why does my sugarcane grow unevenly?
Uneven growth usually follows uneven soil: hard patches, low spots that hold water, salts, or uneven irrigation. A soil test and a walk across the field at tillering show where the problem is.
Which Immunity product is for sugarcane?
Immunity Sugarcane Special, developed with growers in South Gujarat. Immunity Granules can go in at planting for soil structure.
